I am a big fan of Heavy Metal so I wanted to make a project that would allow me to nerd out about the genre. I wanted it to be something unique, so I made a booklet that folded out in multiple directions. By having it unfold in multiple directions, I could show how big the genre was and how one era would influence another.

There are dozens of genres and even more sub genres so I wanted to focus on the major ones that played a part in the evolution of Music. Instead of making a simple two page spread, I wanted to make a booklet that could help illustrate the growth of the movement from one genre to another.

I came up with the idea of making a booklet that flips out in different directions to show the progression. When unfolded the booklet shows a rough lineage connecting all the genres.

I spent some time organizing which section would go where.

I wanted to give the type a grungy feel to it, much like the scribbles of a metal head teenager writing in his notebook during study hall. To do this I wrote out all the type by hand using a tablet.

I first scripted out each  chapter and placed them on a page to see how much space was needed and what point size was suitable. Most of the chapters were in depth essays spanning multiple paragraphs, but after seeing the pages I was working with, these paragraphs were stripped down to their bare bones message.
